Paint Lesson 4

Using the magic wand tool

Magic Wand

part 1 - the skier

This tool will select areas of your image based on color. You can then either remove these sections or expand them to be copied - it depends on what you want to do with the image.

The tolerance setting tells the wand how closely to match the color. It can be adjusted so you pick up more or less of an image's colored pixels

Let's try a few examples:

Copy this image and paste into Paint.net as a new image

Use the Freehand tool to select just the skier
Copy and Paste the selection as a new image

Select the Magic Wand - set the tolerance to 30% and click on the color you want to remove - in this case the white background

Press the delete button

Ok, so now go find an image - maybe of a snow covered mountain

Paste it into paint.net as a new image
Now go back and select around the skier, edit-copy
go to the new picture and this time
Paste as a new layer
You can then resizie or move the skier using the move tool
You may end up with something like this:

Save this as Skier_Practice in your folderr

Part 2 - The Bunny

You can also use the magic wand tool to select areas of the same color. This can be a bit tricky so don't get frustrated if it does not work the first time. Get used to changing the tolerance settings and starting over if you need to.

Start with this image:

Copy and paste as a new image into Paint.net
Use the Magic Wand and try a tolerance setting of 37% and click in the middle of the rabbit
Hold down Ctrl and keep clicking to expand the selection
Your photo may start to look something like this:

Eventually you want it to look like this:

copy the selection and past into 2 new images - you can use the eraser tool and/or the magic wand to touch up any small errors
Save as bunny_practice images in your folder
Here are some examples:
